App FAQ
Thank you for joining the Rhinoplasty Guild. Dean’s App is a mobile app that will hopefully become a reliable resource for rhinoplasty related information. As more members join, the community will grow and the benefits will flourish. Dean’s App is a multidimensional resource that has many sections. As with most e-based resources, there will be many questions on how to use Dean’s App. Listed below are some of the frequently asked questions.
Who has access to Dean’s App?
The only people who will have access to Dean’s App will be those who are members of the Rhinoplasty Guild. To become a member of the Rhinoplasty Guild you will have to gain access to the app through your code on the inside cover of volume 1 of the book, “Structure Rhinoplasty: Lessons Learned in Thirty Years.” To download the app, go to the iTunes App Store if you have an iPhone or iPad. If you have an AndroidTM smartphone or tablet, go to the Google Play Store to download the app. You will be prompted to provide your activation code once the app is downloaded. Once you have submitted your code you will enroll by completing a “profile” that provides information related to your training, certification and rhinoplasty experience. You will then be approved to be a member of the Rhinoplasty Guild. Only physicians will be able to become a member of the Rhinoplasty Guild. There may be a couple of days delay for your membership to the Rhinoplasty Guild to be approved. Once you are approved you will have complimentary access to the basic version of Dean’s App. To gain access to the premium version of Dean’s App you will have to pay a monthly fee of $10.00 per month.
Do I have to pay an extra fee to have access to Dean’s App?
If you purchase the book “Structure Rhinoplasty: Lessons Learned in Thirty Years,” you will have access to the “basic” version of Dean’s App. The basic version will include access to the Dean’s App Entries section of the app. The “basic version” will only allow you to access Dean’s App from one device. You will be able to view the full length videos for the first eight cases in chapter 14. In order to have access to the rest of the videos in chapter 14 as well as the other features of Dean’s App (“Original version” and “living version” of chapters 13 and 14, Wikirhinopedia, Rhinoplasty Guild Forum, DT TV, Rhinocast, Deanzpace and other features), you will have to upgrade to the premium version (Dean’s APP PV) of Dean’s App. The monthly charge for Dean’s App PV is $10.00 per month. This fee helps to cover the costs for maintenance of the app and the constant updating and addition of new content. With the “premium version” of Dean’s App you will be able to access the app from two devices. The videos in chapter 14 will be added to Dean’s App over a period of one year after the publication date. As new videos are added a notification will be sent out.
From how many devices can you access Dean’s App?
If you have the “basic version” of Dean’s App you will be able to access Dean’s App from one device. If you have the “premium version” of Dean’s App, you will be able to access the app from two devices. These device will be linked to the activation code on the inner cover of volume one of the rhinoplasty book. If you decide to change devices you will have to contact customer service and get a new activation code. If you would like to have access to Dean’s App on a third device you will have to pay a separate fee.
What is the significance of the digital versions of the book on Dean’s App?
The first section of Dean’s App will include the “original version” and the “living version” of the textbook, Structure Rhinoplasty: Lessons Learned Over Thirty Years. The “original version” will have a digital version of original textbook as published. As we all know, once a textbook is published it will immediately start to become obsolete once the ink hits the pages. Through the “living version” of Structure Rhinoplasty: Lessons Learned Over Thirty Years, I will continually update the book to keep it current. This is a very important part of Dean’s App, making this book a “living” document. Initially, the “original version” and the “living version” will only have chapters 13 and 14. In the “living version” on Dean’s App, I will continually add clinical cases to chapter 13 and video cases to chapter 14. As updates are made, I will add to the “living version.” Eventually, I hope to have the entire book in both the “original version” and the continually updated text in the “living version.” This will allow me to keep the book up to date and relevant without doing a second edition. I am making this effort to enhance the learning experience and hopefully make Dean’s App the most accurate rhinoplasty resource available.
How will notifications be sent about new content on Dean’s App?
As new content is added to Dean’s App, notifications will be sent via your device. Under the section of Dean’s App, “Notes from the Editor,” announcements of new additions will be made as well as changes to the app. It would be helpful to check this part of the Dean’s App whenever a new announcement is posted.
What is Wikirhinopedia?
Wikirhinopedia is a section of Dean’s App which consists of a multi-author resource that has many authorities on rhinoplasty presenting techniques they have introduced or mastered. This section of the app is a vast resource that provides information on many important techniques that are not covered in the book. This addition provides the reader with a comprehensive overview of rhinoplasty as performed today. There is a “How I do it” section where the authors present a technique that they have mastered. Each technique is coupled with a video demonstrating the technique. In the “Clinical Problems” section, each author presents a clinical condition and shows how they manage a patient with that particular deformity. The “original articles” section has multiple original research articles that have been submitted by authors and have been peer reviewed by our editorial staff.
Can I contribute to Wikirhinopedia?
You can submit a chapter or any other content to editordeansapp@gmail.com. The content will be reviewed by the editorial staff and acceptance for publication will be determined by the editorial staff of Dean’s App.
If I have an interesting rhinoplasty case can I present it on Dean’s App?
If you have an interesting rhinoplasty case that you would like to publish on Dean’s App you can submit it to editordeansapp@gmail.com using the format for the clinical case section of Wikirhinopedia. You can email us at editordeansapp@gmail.com to request a fact sheet showing the format and criteria for publication.
What is Deanzpace?
Deanzpace is an open forum that allows all members of the Rhinoplasty Guild to communicate and pass on information. In this part of the app you can post comments on a rhinoplasty-related topic, rhinoplasty-related videos, rhinoplasty meeting announcements, and clinical patient photographs (with proper consent). If you performed a case and love the outcome and would like to share it, post it. Members of the Rhinoplasty Guild will be able to “like” your posts and leave comments. I hope this will provide the Rhinoplasty Guild with a means of communicating and making new contacts. You will have to clearly identify yourself when you make posts on Deanzpace, and only members of the Rhinoplasty Guild will have access to Deanzpace.
What is Rhinocast?
Rhinocast is a feature of Dean’s app that will present “live” surgeries performed at meetings, presentations, short video vignettes, and commentary. Commentaries may be on sections of the book, new techniques, or controversies in rhinoplasty. Rhinocasts will be presented as either audio alone or video with audio. I will also invite guests to present rhinocasts. New rhinocasts will be announced when they are available for viewing.
What is DT TV?
DT TV is a live streaming component of Dean’s app that will occasionally stream a production in “real time.” I will use DT TV to live stream presentations, interviews, panel discussions, and rhinoplasty surgeries. These productions will be announced ahead of time so members of the Rhinoplasty Guild can view them.
What is the multilingual section of Dean’s App?
Once the translations are completed, there will be translated versions of “Structure Rhinoplasty: Lessons Learned in Thirty Years.” The plan is to have Spanish, Portuguese and Korean versions. In the future, many other translations should be available. In the multilingual section of the app, you will be able to read the book in the designated language in the digital version on the book. These translated versions will likely not be available until 2020.
How do I use the Dean’s App entries?
As you read through the book, you will see references to Dean’s App entries. Each chapter has numerous Dean’s App entries that provide access to an image, an illustration, a reference, a video or a search marker. In some cases, a technique is being described and a previously mentioned photo or illustration is referenced. To avoid flipping back in the book to see the image, you can go to that Dean’s App entry in the Dean’s App Entry section of the app to see the visual of interest. In many cases, the Dean’s App entry will direct you to a video clip that demonstrates the technique being described. You can simply tap the Dean’s App entry and the video will play. In most cases, the Dean’s App entry is used to provide a search tool to locate specific rhinoplasty related topics. The most efficient way to utilize the Dean’s App entries is to keep your app open to the Dean’s App entry section and as you read you can open the Dean’s App entries that are noted in the section as those are the ones that will have active information for the reader. In the digital version of the textbook in the app, you will be able to read and click on the Dean’s App entries and they will open up to the image or video that is referenced. This is a very nice feature and will be particularly helpful when the entire book is available in the digital version on Dean’s App.
How do I perform a search on Dean’s App?
The search mode on Dean’s App is very helpful and can provide the reader with an excellent means of locating information on any rhinoplasty related topic. If you go into the search mode, you can type in your keywords and then hit the search prompt. In seconds a list of references will pop up. Multiple Dean’s App entries will come up. You can then proceed to the textbook and flip to the page that has the designated Dean’s App entry and you will be directed to your topic of interest. In fact, most of the Dean’s App entries are not associated with an image or video. Most of the Dean’s App entries are associated with a number of keywords. This was set up to allow rapid and efficient indexing and to provide a comprehensive search tool. For example, if you search “subdomal graft,” you will be prompted to go to Dean’s App 9-22. If you locate Dean’s App 9-22 on the column of the page of the book in chapter 9, you will see the section describing the subdomal graft. You can also use the index and table of contents to find topics of interest. I believe the search mode in Dean’s App will provide the most comprehensive means to search specific rhinoplasty related topics.

Internet access is necessary to run Dean’s App. You need a minimum download speed of 3 Megabits per second to watch a single video stream in clear, standard definition.
